A hit video game is being used to hunt down players in the real world. Terrifyingly, when players are murdered in the game, their bodies disappear too. Los Angeles detective John Riley (Tom Berenger) is called to investigate when a girl turns up dead, presumed hunted in an online video game, but it's just one of many victims in a bizarre case that soon threatens to destroy his life and family. First time director and writer William Brent Bell (creator of The Cell) weaves an intriguing mystery that also involves a conspiracy theory, and for once there is very little virtual violence in the film. More like a thriller than an action film, Manhunt is about as realistic as they come as it clearly doesn't take place in a fantasy world where people can walk through walls. The characters are all too real and believable as they face challenges, including facing loss and tragedy. ...André Benjamin (of Outkast fame) plays a role that is pre-destined to be unforgettable, yet another remarkable contribution from this gifted actor. The film drew mixed reviews; some praising the concept of interweaving video game elements into a realistic story while others criticized the plausibility of it.
